Memories of Roslyn

Found these pix in an album. First is Marchie's Garage a.k.a. Village Service Station located at the intersection of Old Northern Blvd and East Broadway. The Gulf station was across the street. Across from the Gulf station was the Roslyn Hotel. They are all  gone. I'm guessing the pix were taken in the late 50's on a Sunday. My father took the pictures and he was only off on Sundays.

Marchie Grella, the proprietor  is the man at the far right. My sister and I are on the other side.  The brick building in the background was the former telephone building. Telephone operators manned their post in front of a switchboard and when you picked up the phone, the voice at the other end would say, "number please". In Roslyn, the telephone exchange was originally "Roslyn", then, "Roslyn 3". When dial phones were introduced, the exchange became "Mayfair 1".  When Roslyn switched to dial phones the phone company moved out of that building to a new one on Warner Avenue in Roslyn Heights. We lived next to the telephone building. Occasionally, Lucky, our dog would go out and jump on the operators reporting or leaving work and would ruin their nylon stockings. They knew they could go down to my fathers luncheonette in the village and my dad  would reimburse them for their ruined hose.

More to come when I have time...
